On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous

Ocean Vuong have written On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous. It's formed as a letter to his mum, who can't read and therefore will never read it. His mum is from Vietnam and mixed race, American and Vietnamese. Ocean Vuong grew up Hartford, Connecticut with his violently loving mum and grandmother. As he grows up and as a teenager he has his first crush on Trevor. Trevor doesn't really want to be gay, and the relationship doesn't last. The way Ocean Vuong writes poetic letters not to be read, and the way he describes major events in his life, is so understated and not dramatized. I really liked the book, a short but beautiful read.
